Children with a broad range of disabilities have a higher prevalence of obesity. This presentation will examine disparities in obesity rates by disability status among a US sample of adolescents aged 12 to 18 years. Key risk factors for obesity among adolescents with disabilities will be identified and barriers for effective obesity prevention within this population will be discussed.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Dr. Mia Papas is Director of Clinical Research and Health Outcomes at the Value Institute in the Christiana Care Health System.\u00a0Dr. Papas\u2019 research is focused on three primary areas: 1) health disparities; 2) maternal and child health, and 3) diet and cancer. The central theme across these research areas is the application of epidemiology as a method to identify the social and behavioral characteristics of communities and individuals that influence population health.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Papas is actively engaged in research focused on the role of maternal dietary factors in influencing child obesity, premature mortality among those with severe mental illness, and health disparities experienced by those with physical and emotional disabilities.\u00a0Dr. Papas received her PhD in Epidemiology from the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health.\u00a0She has authored over 40 peer-reviewed articles, has obtained funding from the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and has presented her research at over 80 National and International conferences.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Papas has analytic expertise in\u00a0experimental and observational study designs, the assessment of validity and reliability of screening tools, sample size and statistical power, the analysis of longitudinal data, hierarchical linear modeling, the use of GIS in understanding the effect of place on health and health behaviors, factor analysis, survival analysis, and multivariate logistic and linear regression. Dr. Papas has also been an active member of the American Public Health Association and the American College of Epidemiology for over 15 years and is a Founding Board Member for the Delaware Public Health Association.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The Innovative Discoveries Series, sponsored by the Delaware Clinical &amp; Translational Science ACCEL program and the Christiana Care Value Institute, features informal presentations on topics relevant to current research and healthcare practice, led by knowledgeable and experienced presenters. There are offerings for researchers, healthcare providers, and community members of varying levels of experience.<\/p>\n<p>These free talks are held Fridays at noon at Christiana Hospital but can be viewed from your home or office computer.
