The Institute of Medicine and the National Academy of Engineering proposed a medicine-engineering partnership to address these challenges. Mayo Clinic’s Kern Center for the Science of Health Care Delivery hosts the Information and Decision Engineering program that translates research and development in operations research and decision science to transform care delivery. This talk focuses on some of the systems engineering and informatics initiatives, that changed practice and improved value of care within Mayo’s practice. Specific practice areas of improvement include Surgery, Emergency Medicine and Radiology. The creation of Clinical Engineering Learning Laboratories (CELLs) to partner clinicians and engineers, embed learners, establish big data and analytics environments, and leverage technology such as radio frequency identification will be highlighted. Join the discussion on best practices and lessons learned.

Dr. Kal Pasupathy, Associate Professor in Mayo College of Medicine is an expert in systems science and health informatics. With over 16 years of experience, he leads the Information and Decision Engineering program and is the founding scientific director of the Clinical Engineering Learning Laboratories. Notably, his team’s inventions have won awards and impacted American and British Red Cross, and within health care in nursing, pharmacy, surgery, emergency medicine and radiology. He has conducted several funded projects, has published over 45 peer-reviewed articles and a book on health informatics. He is frequently sought to consult or talk internationally on care delivery.

The Innovative Discoveries Series, sponsored by the Delaware Clinical & Translational Science ACCEL program and the Christiana Care Value Institute, features informal presentations on topics relevant to current research and healthcare practice, led by knowledgeable and experienced presenters. There are offerings for researchers, healthcare providers, and community members of varying levels of experience.

These free talks are held Fridays at noon at Christiana Hospital but can be viewed from your home or office computer.
