Vishal Patel, M.D., MBA, is a senior clinical investigator at the Value Institute and the clinical practice lead for ChristianaCare’s largest primary care practice at MAP2. In his clinical, operational, and evaluator role, he focuses on improving patient outcomes through fostering teamwork, invigorating joy in the workplace, and alleviating caregiver burnout. He has been the receipent of Top Doc in Delaware and was also recognized as a rising star by ChristianaCare’s Medical Dental Staff.
At the service line level, he has impressively led the Transitions of Care efforts to create a standardized approach for patient discharges from acute care setting to primary care follow up. This initiative requires a multidisciplinary team, coordinating various efforts by CareVio, access center, primary care offices, billing and compliance. In addition, he is evaluating virtual scribes on its impact on clinicians’ documentation burden and provides monthly billing tips to all clinicians.
At the practice level, he has instilled the importance of wellness through lifestyle education and exercise sessions through a structured curriculum for the staff. As the clinical leader, he recognizes the value of communication and has created a weekly newsletter to provide clinicians’ important updates. In addition, he recently was awarded a grant to provide group diabetic classes to the practice’s Medicare patients and using funding for ride shares and healthy prepared meals.
His main focus areas for research include implementing digital interventions for primary care patients and evaluating its effectiveness on clinically relevant outcomes.
Dr. Patel earned his medical degree with distinction in service from Albany Medical College and his MBA in health systems administration from Union Graduate College. He completed is dual internal medicine-pediatrics residency at ChristianaCare and served as chief resident in his last year of training. Upon completion of residency, he served as Associate Medical Director for Ambulatory Quality and Safety at MedStar Health and returned back to ChristianaCare in October 2017.
He currently lives in North Wilmington with his wife, Vrunda Patel who is a pediatric gynecologist, and two young children.
